Iris had heard all of that too. So she put four sentences somewhere she couldn't put away in a drawer — around a plain steel ring she could wear every day.

The third sentence was the one she needed most.

What it actually says

"If I have harmed anyone in any way, either knowingly or unknowingly, through my own confusions, I ask their forgiveness. If anyone has harmed me in any way, either knowingly or unknowingly, through their own confusions, I forgive them. And if there is a situation I am not yet ready to forgive, I forgive myself for that. For all the ways that I harm myself, negate, doubt, belittle myself, judge or be unkind to myself, through my own confusions, I forgive myself."

Most people go back to the third one.

It's the only sentence that doesn't ask you to be further along than you are.

The prayer is engraved around the outside of the band.

After a while, you begin to know where the sentences are without looking. Your thumb finds the lettering when an old thought turns up again.

It doesn't fix what's there. It just interrupts the thought for a moment — sometimes long enough to get a say in what happens next.
